Michelin Star cooking in a motorhome: Eating local while travelling

As travelling tourists in our motorhomes, campervans and caravans, we have a unique ability to make an impact on the local economies we visit. Staying in a destination means that we can spend money and help small businesses be it cafes, shops, attractions or campsites.
In this special episode, we are doing something a little different. Matt has been challenged to source a motorhome feast all from within a few miles of our camp. By sourcing local foods and produce, we endeavour to taste the destination and enjoy more of what the region has to offer, all of which is to be prepared and cooked in our lovely Adria Twin campervan with a 2 burner gas hob and a small grill.
Now, it's safe to say Matt is no culinary expert, which is why we've enlisted the help of a professional, Mr Matthew Pennington, who owns the local Michelin Green star restaurant, The Ethicurean in Wrington. Matthew has kindly agreed to show us how a meal in a campervan can be sourced locally, affordable, simple to cook and even fit for an award-winning restaurant.
Our challenge to you is rather than purchasing food at home before you travel, arrive at your destination and visit the local shops, find the region's flavours and taste the destination. Make a difference to the local economies you visit and have a positive impact on the businesses there.

What is payload and how do you calculate it?

Living in a campervan: Feasts and Fables

Meet JoJo and Barrie, aka Feasts and Fables (respectively). JoJo is the cook with a passion for food, whilst Barrie is the storyteller. Following working lives, then the successful launch of a deli in South Wales they decided to do something different.
In January 2020, they sold up to do vanlife! 2 years on, they now live full time in their converted van with simple pleasures and simple life. Their journey is one of freedom.

Living in a motorhome in retirement

This week, Matt caught up with friends Paul & Michelle Lacey, a married couple who took early retirement, sold up and headed off to pursue a new dream. And when we say sold up, we really mean sold up! The house, the cars, the appliances, all of it!
Their plan? Head off in the motorhome and travel for at least 3 years.
If you've ever had the same dream, these guys may just be the final piece of inspiration you need to do it. Learning as they go, this episode includes some great tips too. At the time of talking to Paul and Michelle, they are 2 months into the trip and having a whale of a time - feel fitter and healthier than ever before.

The rising cost of living and the effect on holidays

We don't have to tell you twice: Life is getting more expensive. Fuel, energy, the weekly shop and general day-to-day living costs are all on the rise. But what impact is this having on tourism businesses?
Keith asks Matt about his experience as a motorhome hire business and camping shop owner. Is there really a slowdown? Are people changing their spending habits?
Matt looks into his crystal ball to see what this summer might look like for holidaymakers and tourism. For some families, a foreign holiday may be unaffordable, with the UK camping holiday as their chosen alternative.
